Altertek were invited by one of the UKs leading battery pack assemblers to design and manufacture a custom Battery Management System for one of their clients to use in their robots in automated warehousing.
The client that operates one of the largest automated warehouses in the UK has a state of the art warehouse control system that oversees every aspect of the robots performing their tasks, from what boxes to move, what items to pick and when robots require charging or maintenance
The Battery Management System (BMS) that Altertek designed had to flawlessly integrate with the warehouse control system, the robot and the charging platform to help ensure the automated warehouse operates at optimum efficiency.
To help achieve this, the BMS controls the rate of charge of the robot battery by scaling the charge rate depending on the temperature of the battery cells to achieve the fastest possible charge rate while simultaneously calculating state of charge and other parameters of the battery.
The BMS then relays critical information to the warehouse control system using their custom CAN bus protocol.
The project was a great success and over 5000 battery management systems were delivered to the client over a three year period.
